"Features:
- Reduce pipe->mutex contention by pre-allocating pages outside the
lock in anon_pipe_write().
anon_pipe_write() called alloc_page() once per page while holding
pipe->mutex. The allocation can sleep doing direct reclaim and runs
memcg charging, which extends the critical section and stalls any
concurrent reader on the same mutex. Now up to 8 pages are
pre-allocated before the mutex is taken, leftovers are recycled
into the per-pipe tmp_page[] cache before unlock, and any remainder
is released after unlock, keeping the allocator out of the critical
section on both sides. On a writers x readers sweep with 64KB
writes against a 1 MB pipe throughput improves 6-28% and average
write latency drops 5-22%; under memory pressure - when the cost of
holding the mutex across reclaim is highest - throughput improves
21-48% and latency drops 17-33%. The microbenchmark is added to
selftests.
- uaccess/sockptr: fix the ignored_trailing logic in
copy_struct_to_user() to behave as documented and the usize check
in copy_struct_from_sockptr() for user pointers, and add
copy_struct_{from,to}_bounce_buffer() and copy_struct_to_sockptr()
helpers for upcoming users (IPPROTO_SMBDIRECT, IPPROTO_QUIC).
- bpf: add a sleepable bpf_real_inode() kfunc that resolves the real
inode backing a dentry via d_real_inode(). On overlayfs the inode
attached to the dentry doesn't carry the underlying device
information; this is used by the filesystem restriction BPF program
that was merged into systemd.
- docs: add guidelines for submitting new filesystems, motivated by
the maintenance burden abandoned and untestable filesystems impose
on VFS developers, blocking infrastructure work like folio
conversions and iomap migration.
Fixes:
- libfs: set SB_I_NOEXEC and SB_I_NODEV by default in init_pseudo()
and drop the now-redundant assignments in callers. This began as a
one-line dma-buf fix for a path_noexec() warning; a pseudo
filesystem has no reason not to set SB_I_NOEXEC. All init_pseudo()
callers were audited: the only visible effect is on dma-buf where
SB_I_NOEXEC silences the warning.
- Handle set_blocksize() failures in legacy filesystems (bfs, hpfs,
qnx4, jfs, befs, affs, isofs, minix, ntfs3, omfs). Mounting a
device with a sector size > PAGE_SIZE crashed roughly half of them;
the rest had the same missing error handling pattern. Plus a
follow-up releasing the superblock buffer_head when setting the
minix v3 block size fails.
- mount: honour SB_NOUSER in the new mount API.
- fs/fcntl: fix a SOFTIRQ-unsafe lock order in fasync signaling by
switching the process-group paths of send_sigio() and send_sigurg()
from read_lock(&tasklist_lock) to RCU, matching the single-PID
path.
- vfs: add an FS_USERNS_DELEGATABLE flag and set it for NFS, fixing
delegated NFS mounts (fsopen() in a container with the mount
performed by a privileged daemon) that broke when non-init
s_user_ns was tied to FS_USERNS_MOUNT.
- selftests/namespaces: fix a hang in nsid_test where an unreaped
grandchild kept the TAP pipe write-end open, a waitpid(-1) race in
listns_efault_test, and a false FAIL on kernels without listns()
where the tests should SKIP.
- filelock: fix the break_lease() stub signature for
CONFIG_FILE_LOCKING=n.
- init/initramfs_test: wait for the async initramfs unpacking before
running; the test and do_populate_rootfs() share the parser state.
- fs/coredump: reduce redundant log noise in
validate_coredump_safety().
- iomap: pass the correct length to fserror_report_io() in
__iomap_write_begin().
- backing-file: fix the backing_file_open() kerneldoc.
Cleanups:
- initramfs: refactor the cpio hex header parsing to use hex2bin()
instead of the hand-rolled simple_strntoul() which is reverted, and
extend the initramfs KUnit tests to cover header fields with 0x
prefixes.
- Replace __get_free_pages() and friends with kmalloc()/kzalloc()
across quota, proc, ocfs2/dlm, nilfs2, nfs, nfsd, libfs, jfs, jbd2,
isofs, fuse, select, namespace, configfs, binfmt_misc, bfs, and the
do_mounts init code - part of the larger work of replacing page
allocator calls with kmalloc().
- Use clear_and_wake_up_bit() in unlock_buffer() and
journal_end_buffer_io_sync() instead of open-coding the sequence.
- Drop unused VFS exports: unexport drop_super_exclusive(), remove
start_removing_user_path_at(), and fold __start_removing_path()
into start_removing_path().
- fs/read_write: narrow the __kernel_write() export with
EXPORT_SYMBOL_FOR_MODULES().
- vfs: uapi: retire octal and hex constants in favor of (1 << n) for
the O_ flags. Finding a free bit for a new flag across the
architectures was needlessly hard with the mixed bases.
- dcache: add extra sanity checks of dead dentries in dentry_free()
via a new DENTRY_WARN_ONCE() that also prints d_flags.
- iov_iter: use kmemdup_array() in dup_iter() to harden the
allocation against multiplication overflow.
- fs/pipe: write to ->poll_usage only once.
- vfs: remove an always-taken if-branch in find_next_fd().
- dcache: use kmalloc_flex() for struct external_name in __d_alloc().
- namei: use QSTR() instead of QSTR_INIT() in path_pts().
- sync_file_range: delete dead S_ISLNK code.
- Comment fixes: retire a stale comment in fget_task_next() and fix
assorted spelling mistakes"

vfs: uapi: retire octal and hex numbers in favor of (1 << n) for O_ flags
A recent build failure[1] exposed the diffculty of working with the
current octal and hex definitions of O_ flags when trying to find a gap
for a new flag. This difficulty is compounded by the fact that O_ flags
may have architectural specific values.
Replace the hex/octal #defines, which are hard to parse when looking for
free bits, with explicit bit shifts like (1 << 11). Also, add comments
that identify which architectures redefine some of the seemingly free
("cursed") bits in uapi/asm-generic/fcntl.h. These should not be used to
define new O_ flags (for now, at least).
The translastion was done with Claude Opus 4.8, and verified with a
(non-AI) gawk script. The accounting of which architectures claim
which bit-gaps in uapi/asm-generic/fcntl.h is also done by hand.

ring-buffer: Flush and stop persistent ring buffer on panic
On real hardware, panic and machine reboot may not flush hardware cache
to memory. This means the persistent ring buffer, which relies on a
coherent state of memory, may not have its events written to the buffer
and they may be lost. Moreover, there may be inconsistency with the
counters which are used for validation of the integrity of the
persistent ring buffer which may cause all data to be discarded.
To avoid this issue, stop recording of the ring buffer on panic and
flush the cache of the ring buffer's memory.

console: mdacon: remove this obsolete driver
The mdacon driver supports using ISA MDA or Hercules-compatible display adapters as a secondary text console. This was commonly used in the 1990s and earlier for debugging software which took over the primary display. It is highly unlikely anyone is doing so nowadays because serial consoles and much better methods of debugging exist. The driver is not enabled by any defconfig, nor any of the dozens of distro configs collected at [1]. It has been relegated to VTs 13-16 since commit |

many cases, so architectures often build the code directly into
the core kernel, or create another module for the architecture

Merge branch 'nocache-cleanup'
This series cleans up some of the special user copy functions naming and semantics. In particular, get rid of the (very traditional) double underscore names and behavior: the whole "optimize away the range check" model has been largely excised from the other user accessors because it's so subtle and can be unsafe, but also because it's just not a relevant optimization any more. To do that, a couple of drivers that misused the "user" copies as kernel copies in order to get non-temporal stores had to be fixed up, but that kind of code should never have been allowed anyway. The x86-only "nocache" version was also renamed to more accurately reflect what it actually does. This was all done because I looked at this code due to a report by Jann Horn, and I just couldn't stand the inconsistent naming, the horrible semantics, and the random misuse of these functions. This code should probably be cleaned up further, but it's at least slightly closer to normal semantics. I had a more intrusive series that went even further in trying to normalize the semantics, but that ended up hitting so many other inconsistencies between different architectures in this area (eg 'size_t' vs 'unsigned long' vs 'int' as size arguments, and various iovec check differences that Vasily Gorbik pointed out) that I ended up with this more limited version that fixed the worst of the issues. mm: convert do_brk_flags() to use vma_flags_t
In order to be able to do this, we need to change VM_DATA_DEFAULT_FLAGS and friends and update the architecture-specific definitions also. We then have to update some KSM logic to handle VMA flags, and introduce VMA_STACK_FLAGS to define the vma_flags_t equivalent of VM_STACK_FLAGS. We also introduce two helper functions for use during the time we are converting legacy flags to vma_flags_t values - vma_flags_to_legacy() and legacy_to_vma_flags(). This enables us to iteratively make changes to break these changes up into separate parts. We use these explicitly here to keep VM_STACK_FLAGS around for certain users which need to maintain the legacy vm_flags_t values for the time being. We are no longer able to rely on the simple VM_xxx being set to zero if the feature is not enabled, so in the case of VM_DROPPABLE we introduce VMA_DROPPABLE as the vma_flags_t equivalent, which is set to EMPTY_VMA_FLAGS if the droppable flag is not available. While we're here, we make the description of do_brk_flags() into a kdoc comment, as it almost was already. We use vma_flags_to_legacy() to not need to update the vm_get_page_prot() logic as this time. Note that in create_init_stack_vma() we have to replace the BUILD_BUG_ON() with a VM_WARN_ON_ONCE() as the tested values are no longer build time available. We also update mprotect_fixup() to use VMA flags where possible, though we have to live with a little duplication between vm_flags_t and vma_flags_t values for the time being until further conversions are made. While we're here, update VM_SPECIAL to be defined in terms of VMA_SPECIAL_FLAGS now we have vma_flags_to_legacy(). Finally, we update the VMA tests to reflect these changes. arch, mm: consolidate empty_zero_page
Reduce 22 declarations of empty_zero_page to 3 and 23 declarations of ZERO_PAGE() to 4. Every architecture defines empty_zero_page that way or another, but for the most of them it is always a page aligned page in BSS and most definitions of ZERO_PAGE do virt_to_page(empty_zero_page). Move Linus vetted x86 definition of empty_zero_page and ZERO_PAGE() to the core MM and drop these definitions in architectures that do not implement colored zero page (MIPS and s390). ZERO_PAGE() remains a macro because turning it to a wrapper for a static inline causes severe pain in header dependencies. For the most part the change is mechanical, with these being noteworthy: * alpha: aliased empty_zero_page with ZERO_PGE that was also used for boot parameters. Switching to a generic empty_zero_page removes the aliasing and keeps ZERO_PGE for boot parameters only * arm64: uses __pa_symbol() in ZERO_PAGE() so that definition of ZERO_PAGE() is kept intact. * m68k/parisc/um: allocated empty_zero_page from memblock, although they do not support zero page coloring and having it in BSS will work fine. * sparc64 can have empty_zero_page in BSS rather allocate it, but it can't use virt_to_page() for BSS. Keep it's definition of ZERO_PAGE() but instead of allocating it, make mem_map_zero point to empty_zero_page. * sh: used empty_zero_page for boot parameters at the very early boot. Rename the parameters page to boot_params_page and let sh use the generic empty_zero_page. * hexagon: had an amusing comment about empty_zero_page /* A handy thing to have if one has the RAM. powerpc/crash: Update backup region offset in elfcorehdr on memory hotplug
When elfcorehdr is prepared for kdump, the program header representing
the first 64 KB of memory is expected to have its offset point to the
backup region. This is required because purgatory copies the first 64 KB
of the crashed kernel memory to this backup region following a kernel
crash. This allows the capture kernel to use the first 64 KB of memory
to place the exception vectors and other required data.
When elfcorehdr is recreated due to memory hotplug, the offset of
the program header representing the first 64 KB is not updated.
As a result, the capture kernel exports the first 64 KB at offset
0, even though the data actually resides in the backup region.
Fix this by calling sync_backup_region_phdr() to update the program
header offset in the elfcorehdr created during memory hotplug.
sync_backup_region_phdr() works for images loaded via the
kexec_file_load syscall. However, it does not work for kexec_load,
because image->arch.backup_start is not initialized in that case.
So introduce machine_kexec_post_load() to process the elfcorehdr
prepared by kexec-tools and initialize image->arch.backup_start for
kdump images loaded via kexec_load syscall.
Rename update_backup_region_phdr() to sync_backup_region_phdr() and
extend it to synchronize the backup region offset between the kdump
image and the ELF core header. The helper now supports updating either
the kdump image from the ELF program header or updating the ELF program
header from the kdump image, avoiding code duplication.
Define ARCH_HAS_KIMAGE_ARCH and struct kimage_arch when
CONFIG_KEXEC_FILE or CONFIG_CRASH_DUMP is enabled so that
kimage->arch.backup_start is available with the kexec_load system call.

x86-64/arm64/powerpc: clean up and rename __copy_from_user_flushcache
This finishes the work on these odd functions that were only implemented by a handful of architectures. The 'flushcache' function was only used from the iterator code, and let's make it do the same thing that the nontemporal version does: remove the two underscores and add the user address checking. Yes, yes, the user address checking is also done at iovec import time, but we have long since walked away from the old double-underscore thing where we try to avoid address checking overhead at access time, and these functions shouldn't be so special and old-fashioned. The arm64 version already did the address check, in fact, so there it's just a matter of renaming it. For powerpc and x86-64 we now do the proper user access boilerplate. powerpc/64s: Add support for huge pfnmaps
This uses _RPAGE_SW2 bit for the PMD and PUDs similar to PTEs.
This also adds support for {pte,pmd,pud}_pgprot helpers needed for
follow_pfnmap APIs.
This allows us to extend the PFN mappings, e.g. PCI MMIO bars where
it can grow as large as 8GB or even bigger, to map at PMD / PUD level.
VFIO PCI core driver already supports fault handling at PMD / PUD level
for more efficient BAR mappings.

powerpc: fix KUAP warning in VMX usercopy path
On powerpc with PREEMPT_FULL or PREEMPT_LAZY and function tracing enabled,
KUAP warnings can be triggered from the VMX usercopy path under memory
stress workloads.
KUAP requires that no subfunctions are called once userspace access has
been enabled. The existing VMX copy implementation violates this
requirement by invoking enter_vmx_usercopy() from the assembly path after
userspace access has already been enabled. If preemption occurs
in this window, the AMR state may not be preserved correctly,
leading to unexpected userspace access state and resulting in
KUAP warnings.
Fix this by restructuring the VMX usercopy flow so that VMX selection
and VMX state management are centralized in raw_copy_tofrom_user(),
which is invoked by the raw_copy_{to,from,in}_user() wrappers.
The new flow is:
- raw_copy_{to,from,in}_user() calls raw_copy_tofrom_user()
- raw_copy_tofrom_user() decides whether to use the VMX path
based on size and CPU capability
- Call enter_vmx_usercopy() before enabling userspace access
- Enable userspace access as per the copy direction
and perform the VMX copy
- Disable userspace access as per the copy direction
- Call exit_vmx_usercopy()
- Fall back to the base copy routine if the VMX copy faults
With this change, the VMX assembly routines no longer perform VMX state
management or call helper functions; they only implement the
copy operations.
The previous feature-section based VMX selection inside
__copy_tofrom_user_power7() is removed, and a dedicated
__copy_tofrom_user_power7_vmx() entry point is introduced.
This ensures correct KUAP ordering, avoids subfunction calls
while KUAP is unlocked, and eliminates the warnings while preserving
the VMX fast path.

The usage of ASM_FTR_IFCLR(CPU_TR_ARCH_31) requires asm/cputable.h and asm/feature-fixups.h. Currently these headers are included transitively, but that transitive inclusion is about to go away. On PPC32, for 64 bits vars a pair of registers is used. Usually the
lower register in the pair is the high part and the higher register is
the low part. GCC uses r3/r4 ... r11/r12 ... r14/r15 ... r30/r31
In older kernel code inline assembly was using %1 and %1+1 to represent
64 bits values. However here it looks like clang uses r31 as high part,
allthough r32 doesn't exist hence the error.
Allthoug %1+1 should work, most places now use %L1 instead of %1+1, so
let's do the same here.
With that change, the build doesn't fail anymore and a disassembly shows
clang uses r17/r18 and r31/r14 pair when GCC would have used r16/r17 and
r30/r31:

powerpc/e500: Always use 64 bits PTE
Today there are two PTE formats for e500: - The 64 bits format, used - On 64 bits kernel - On 32 bits kernel with 64 bits physical addresses - On 32 bits kernel with support of huge pages - The 32 bits format, used in other cases Maintaining two PTE formats means unnecessary maintenance burden because every change needs to be implemented and tested for both formats. Remove the 32 bits PTE format. The memory usage increase due to larger PTEs is minimal (approx. 0,1% of memory). This also means that from now on huge pages are supported also with 32 bits physical addresses. mm: convert __HAVE_ARCH_TLB_REMOVE_TABLE to CONFIG_HAVE_ARCH_TLB_REMOVE_TABLE config
For architectures that define __HAVE_ARCH_TLB_REMOVE_TABLE, the page tables at the pmd/pud level are generally not of struct ptdesc type, and do not have pt_rcu_head member, thus these architectures cannot support PT_RECLAIM. In preparation for enabling PT_RECLAIM on more architectures, convert __HAVE_ARCH_TLB_REMOVE_TABLE to CONFIG_HAVE_ARCH_TLB_REMOVE_TABLE config, so that we can make conditional judgments in Kconfig. pseries/plpks: add HCALLs for PowerVM Key Wrapping Module
The hypervisor generated wrapping key is an AES-GCM-256 symmetric key which is stored in a non-volatile, secure, and encrypted storage called the Power LPAR Platform KeyStore. It has policy based protections that prevent it from being read out or exposed to the user. Implement H_PKS_GEN_KEY, H_PKS_WRAP_OBJECT, and H_PKS_UNWRAP_OBJECT HCALLs to enable using the PowerVM Key Wrapping Module (PKWM) as a new trust source for trusted keys. Disallow H_PKS_READ_OBJECT, H_PKS_SIGNED_UPDATE, and H_PKS_WRITE_OBJECT for objects with the 'wrapping key' policy set. Capture the availability status for the H_PKS_WRAP_OBJECT interface. pseries/plpks: expose PowerVM wrapping features via the sysfs
Starting with Power11, PowerVM supports a new feature called "Key Wrapping" that protects user secrets by wrapping them using a hypervisor generated wrapping key. The status of this feature can be read by the H_PKS_GET_CONFIG HCALL. Expose the Power LPAR Platform KeyStore (PLPKS) wrapping features config via the sysfs file /sys/firmware/plpks/config/wrapping_features. powerpc/pseries: move the PLPKS config inside its own sysfs directory
The /sys/firmware/secvar/config directory represents Power LPAR Platform KeyStore (PLPKS) configuration properties such as max_object_size, signed_ update_algorithms, supported_policies, total_size, used_space, and version. These attributes describe the PLPKS, and not the secure boot variables (secvars). Create /sys/firmware/plpks directory and move the PLPKS config inside this directory. For backwards compatibility, create a soft link from the secvar sysfs directory to this config and emit a warning stating that the older sysfs path has been deprecated. Separate out the plpks specific documentation from secvar.
