This introduces major/minor versioning to the superblock version number. Major version number changes indicate incompatible releases; we can move forward to a new major version number, but not backwards. Minor version numbers indicate compatible changes - these add features, but can still be mounted and used by old versions. With the recent patches that make it possible to roll out new btrees and key types without breaking compatibility, we should be able to roll out most new features without incompatible changes. Documentation/admin-guide/README.rst first.
In order to build the documentation, use ``make htmldocs`` or
``make pdfdocs``. The formatted documentation can also be read online at:
https://www.kernel.org/doc/html/latest/
There are various text files in the Documentation/ subdirectory,
several of them using the Restructured Text markup notation.
Please read the Documentation/process/changes.rst file, as it contains the
requirements for building and running the kernel, and information about
the problems which may result by upgrading your kernel.
