This check is incorrect and checks the wrong register. Furthermore there is no documented shared device id register for MAX96712. There might be overlap with the soon to be added MAX96724 device which do document such a register. However as the check was merely a precaution and to check during development that the driver could talk to the device there is no harm in removing it all together. A correct and more sophisticated check can be added later if there ever is a need to differentiate between different versions of a device. Documentation/admin-guide/README.rst first.
In order to build the documentation, use ``make htmldocs`` or
``make pdfdocs``. The formatted documentation can also be read online at:
https://www.kernel.org/doc/html/latest/
There are various text files in the Documentation/ subdirectory,
several of them using the reStructuredText markup notation.
Please read the Documentation/process/changes.rst file, as it contains the
requirements for building and running the kernel, and information about
the problems which may result by upgrading your kernel.
