Samsung mach/soc changes for v7.3
Two minor cleanups:
1. Replace __ASSEMBLY__ with __ASSEMBLER__ in headers to have
consistency with what compilers define.
2. Drop redundant mailing lists from Samsung MAINTAINERS entries (less
code).

While the GCC and Clang compilers already define __ASSEMBLER__
automatically when compiling assembly code, __ASSEMBLY__ is a
macro that only gets defined by the Makefiles in the kernel.
This can be very confusing when switching between userspace
and kernelspace coding, or when dealing with uapi headers that
rather should use __ASSEMBLER__ instead. So let's standardize now
on the __ASSEMBLER__ macro that is provided by the compilers.
This is a completely mechanical patch (done with a simple "sed -i"
statement).

tegra114_gic_cpu_pm_registration() and tegra_init_irq() use
of_find_matching_node() for temporary IRQ init lookups, but the helper
returns a referenced node even when the result is used only as a boolean
or as an of_iomap() input.
Use scoped device_node cleanup for both lookups so the references are
dropped when the functions return.

ARM: nxp: lpc32xx: ARM changes for v7.3
NXP LPC32xx ARM changes for v7.3 contain:
- Karl Mehltretter fixes a multiplatform kernel runtime execution by
limiting LPC32xx SoC specific init functions to be run on this
platform only,
- a stale method of populating DMA, SLC and MLC NAND controllers is
removed from platform code, this change was announced to happen by
the end of this year, all touched by the change controllers are
properly described in the platform device tree for years, and very
old board dtbs are recommended to be updated.

For a good while the common for all NXP LPC32xx platforms lpc32xx.dtsi
file contains proper descriptions of DMA, SLC and MLC NAND controllers,
this allows to remove populated device tree nodes from platform code.
At the end of the last year it was announced that this change to happen,
unlikely there are still users with such old dtbs to be affected by this
change, but if there are such users, they should update board dtb file,
if DMA or NAND controller decriptions are not found in them.

lpc32xx_check_uid() and lpc32xx_pm_init() are arch_initcalls that poke
LPC32xx-only registers. Since the multiplatform conversion they also
run on other ARCH_MULTI_V5 boards where access faults e.g. on versatile:

Drop the arch_initcall() registrations and call both functions directly
from lpc3250_machine_init(), the machine's .init_machine hook.
The calls are placed in link order (common.c, pm.c, phy3250.c) to
keep their previous relative ordering.

imx_scu_probe() requests mailbox channels with the non-managed
mbox_request_channel_byname() helper and then publishes sc_ipc through
the global imx_sc_ipc_handle. Later probe failures, including child
population failure, can leave the channels and global handle live after
the probe has failed.
Register devres actions to free each mailbox channel and clear the global
handle. Also depopulate partially created child devices when
devm_of_platform_populate() reports an error.

Convert the legacy gpio-keys platform device on the StrongARM SA-1100
HP iPAQ H3xxx series boards to use software nodes and device properties.
This helps progress the removal of platform data support from the
gpio-keys driver.
Define static software nodes for the gpio-keys device and the power and
action button child nodes at file scope, referencing the SA-1100 GPIO
controller node directly. In h3xxx_mach_init(), register the software node
group and use platform_device_register_full() to register the device.

properties. This helps progress the removal of platform data support
from the gpio-keys driver.

controller node directly and specifying EV_PWR input type. In
collie_init(), register the software node group and use

nodes so that platform data support can eventually be removed from the

Define and register a static software node (sa1100_gpiochip_node) for the
SA-1100 GPIO controller during sa1100_init_gpio(). Assign its firmware node
directly to the GPIO chip prior to calling gpiochip_add_data().
This allows StrongARM SA-1100 board setup files to reference the SoC GPIO
controller in property entries when converting legacy platform data to
software nodes, resolving pin bindings directly via the attached firmware
node without relying on name matching.

ARM: platform and feature deprecation for 7.3
This is an attempt to bring the source code to the state that we discussed
back in 2024, regarding a timeline for deprecating and removing features,
in particular platforms and ABIs that are basically unused and are
also getting in the way of maintenance.
The earlier consensus was to remove these features in 2025 or 2026
after the corresponding LTS kernel release. I would suggest pushing
these to early 2027 now, see the patch description for details on
each one:
- all board files that are still not converted to DT
(except for OMAP1 and S3C)
- iWMMXt FPU support
- ARMv6/ARM1136r0 (not ARMv6K/ARM1136r1/ARM1176) along with the
OMAP24xx and i.MX31 SoCs using it
- Cortex-M3/M4/M7 based microcontroller support
(stm32, imxrt, lpc18xx, samv7)
- LSI Axxia platform
- OABI, OABI-compat and NWFPE are confined to StrongARM based
builds and scheduled for removal once StrongARM is gone.
- DEPRECATED_PARAM_STRUCT, which was originally scheduled for
removal in 2006 (!)
The ARCH_S3C64XX platform was scheduled for removal in 2024, but is
still actively used and will get removed once Mark Brown stops using
it. The OMAP1 platform has some remaining boardfiles and is expected to
get converted to DT.
Big-endian ARMv7 CPU support is not scheduled for removal but marked
as broken the same way as ARM64 has, to reduce the need for testing
unused configurations. This may be removed in the future if arm64 does
it as well. Note that big-endian ARMv5 support is can still be
enabled since the patches to revive little-endianm mode are still
fresh.
Regarding actually removing the code, I would suggest linux-7.4 (January
2027), removing both the board files and any drivers that have either
become newly unused or were missed in a previous machine removal series,
followed by removing support for then unused CPUs a release later.

The TPM character devices expose a sequential command/response
interface, but their open handlers leave FMODE_PREAD and FMODE_PWRITE
enabled.
After a command leaves a response pending, pread(fd, buf, 16, 0x1400)
passes 0x1400 as *off to tpm_common_read(). The transfer length is
bounded by response_length, but the offset is used unchecked when
forming data_buffer + *off. A sufficiently large offset therefore causes
an out-of-bounds heap read through copy_to_user() and, if the copy
succeeds, an out-of-bounds zero-write through the following memset().
Positional I/O does not provide coherent semantics for this interface.
An arbitrary pread offset cannot represent how much of a response has
been consumed sequentially. The write callback always stores a command
at the start of data_buffer, while pwrite() does not update file->f_pos
and can leave the sequential read cursor stale.
Call nonseekable_open() from both open handlers. This removes
FMODE_PREAD and FMODE_PWRITE, causing positional reads and writes to
fail with -ESPIPE before reaching the TPM callbacks, and explicitly
marks the files non-seekable. Normal read() and write() continue to use
the existing sequential f_pos cursor, leaving the response state machine
unchanged.
Tested on Linux 6.12 with KASAN and a swtpm TPM2 device:
- sequential partial reads returned the complete response
- pread() and preadv() with offset 0x1400 returned -ESPIPE
- pwrite() and pwritev() with offset zero returned -ESPIPE
- the pending response remained intact after the rejected operations
- a subsequent normal command/response cycle completed normally
- no KASAN report was produced.

"The most notable change involves the rseq kselftest common Makefile
(as it is not RISC-V-specific). The basic approach in the patch
appears similar to one used in the KVM and S390 selftests (grep for
LINUX_TOOL_ARCH_INCLUDE and SUBARCH), and the rseq kselftests pass a
quick build test on x86 after this.
- Avoid a null pointer deference in machine_kexec_prepare() that the
IMA subsystem can trigger

In __create_synth_event() the field was allocated but was not freed

On architectures with CONFIG_HAVE_64BIT_ALIGNED_ACCESS set to y, the
ring_buffer_event_length() may return the wrong size. This is because
archs with that config set will always use the "big event meta
header" as that is 8 bytes keeping the payload 8 bytes aligned, even
when a 4 byte header could hold the size of the event
But ring_buffer_event_length() doesn't take this into account and
only subtracts 4 bytes for the meta header in the length when it
should have subtracted 8 bytes
- Have osnoise wait for a full rcu synchronization on unregister
osnoise_unregister_instance() used to call synchronize_rcu() before
freeing its copy of the instance but was switched to kfree_rcu(). The
osniose tracer has code that traverses the instances that it uses,
and inst is just a pointer to that instance. By using kfree_rcu()
instead of synchronize_rcu(), the instance that the inst pointer is
pointing to can be freed while the osnoise code is still referencing
it
That is, a rmdir on an instance first unregisters the tracer. When
the unregister finishes, the rmdir expects that the tracer is
finished with the instance that it is using. By putting back the
synchronize_rcu() in osnoise_unregister_instance() the unregistering
of osnoise will now return when all the users of the instance have
finished
- Remove an unused setting of "ret" in tracing_set_tracer()
- Fix ring_buffer_read_page() copying events
The commit that changed ring_buffer_read_page() to show dropped
events from the buffer itself, split the "commit" variable between
the commit value (with flags) and "size" that holds the size of the
sub-buffer. A cut and paste error changed the test of the reading
from checking the size of the buffer to the size of the event causing
reads to only read one event at a time
- Make tracepoint_printk a static variable
When the tracing sysctl knobs were move from sysctl.c to trace.c, the
variable tracepoint_printk no longer needed to be global. Make it
static

The flags update of the function tracer first checks if the value of
the flag is the same and exits if they are, and then it checks if the
current tracer is the function tracer and exits if it isn't. The
problem is that these checks need to be in a reversed order, as if
the tracer isn't the function tracer, then the flag being checked may
not exist. Reverse the order of these checks
- Fix ufs core trace events to not dereference a pointer in TP_printk()
The TP_printk() part of the TRACE_EVENT() macro is called when the
user reads the "trace" file. This can be seconds, minutes, hours,
days, weeks, and even months after the data was recorded into the
ring buffer. Thus, saving a pointer to an object into the ring buffer
and then dereferencing it from TP_printk() can cause harm as the
object the pointer is pointing to may no longer exist
Fix all the trace events in ufs core to save the device name in the
ring buffer instead of dereferencing the device descriptor from
TP_printk()
- Prevent out-of-bound reads in glob matching of trace events
The filter logic of events allows simple glob logic to add wild cards
to filter on strings. But some events have fields that may not have a
terminating 'nul' character. This may cause the glob matching to go
beyond the string. Change the logic to always pass in the length of
the field that is being matched
- Add no-rcu-check version of trace_##event##_enabled()
The trace_##event##_enabled() usually wraps trace events to do extra
work that is only needed when the trace event is enabled. But this
can hide events that are placed in locations where RCU is not
watching, and can make lockdep not see these bugs when the event is
not enabled
The trace_##event##_enabled() was updated to always test to make sure
RCU is watching to catch locations that may call events without RCU
being active
This caused a false positive for the irq_disabled() and related
events. As that use trace_irq_disabled_enabled() to force RCU to be
watching when the event is enabled via the ct_irq_enter() function,
calls the event, and then calls ct_irq_exit() to put RCU back to its
original state
The trace_irq_disabled_enabled() should not trigger a warning when
RCU is not watching because the code within its block handles the
case properly. Make a __trace_##event##_enabled() version for this
event to use that doesn't check RCU is watching as it handles the
case when it isn't
- Fix use-after-free in user_event_mm_dup()
When the enabler is removed from the link list, it is freed
immediately. But it is protected via RCU and needs to be freed after
an RCU grace period. Use queue_rcu_work() so that the event_mutex can
also be taken as user_event_put() takes the mutex on the last
reference is released
- Free type string in error path of parse_synth_field()
There's an error path in parse_synth_field() where the allocated type
string is not freed
- Add selftest that tests deferred event teardown
- Fix leak in error path of trace_remote_alloc_buffer()
If page allocation fails, the desc->nr_cpus is not incremented for
the current CPU and the allocations done for it are not freed
- Fix allocation length in trace_remote_alloc_buffer()
The logic to calculate the struct_len was doing a double count and
setting the value too large. Calculate the size upfront to fix the
error and simplify the logic
- Fix sparse CPU masks in ring_buffer_desc()
If there are sparse CPUs (gaps in the numbering), the
ring_buffer_desc() will fail as it tests the CPU number against the
number of CPUs that are used

A user-only branch stack can contain branches that originate from
the kernel. As a result, kernel addresses are exposed to user space
even when PERF_SAMPLE_BRANCH_USER is requested. On AMD processors
supporting X86_FEATURE_BRS (Zen 3 only), perf can still report entries
such as SYSRET/interrupt returns for which the branch-from addresses
are in the kernel.

BRS provides no hardware branch filtering, so privilege level
filtering is performed entirely in software. However, amd_brs_match_plm()
only validates the branch-to address against the requested privilege
levels. For branches from the kernel to user space, the branch-from
address is left unchecked and is leaked. Extend the software filter to
also validate the branch-from address, so that any branch record whose
branch-from address is in the kernel is dropped when
PERF_SAMPLE_BRANCH_USER is requested.

If the touchscreen controller reports a touch ID of 0, the driver
calculates the slot ID as touch->id - 1, which underflows to UINT_MAX.
This is passed to input_mt_slot() as -1.
Since the input core ignores negative slot values, the active slot remains
unchanged. The driver then reports the touch coordinates for the previously
active slot, corrupting its state.
Fix this by rejecting touch reports with ID 0.

Only one machine remains supported and was kept in 2022 for the
Debian_on_Buffalo project that was still using this, with plans to
convert it to devicetree.
The conversion never happened, and Debian_on_Buffalo does not provide
kernels later than linux-6.1, so it is unlikely to still be useful
for a DT conversion in the future.
Mark the platform for deprecation after the next LTS kernel, which
should give any remaining users a few more years of bugfixes.

The Axxia platform was initially upstream by Anders Berg for LSI and
later Avago, but this included only support for I2C and reset drivers,
while most of the interesting bits (network, pci, rapidio, usb, ...) or
the arm64 platform support were never merged.
The downstream kernel was maintained by Intel up to linux-5.15 when
the product line was discontinued. Known users include Nokia and
Ericsson, but both of them use kernels derived from the out-of-tree
drivers rather than the upstream version, and will be able to continue
doing that even when the rudimentary mainline support is gone.
Mark it as deprecated for removal after the next LTS kernel.

The Cortex-M3/M4/M7 cores were designed as a replacement for the earlier
ARM7TDMI and ARM9TDMI microarchitectures used in older microcontrollers.
At the moment, Linux can run these cores either when they are integrated
into a larger SoC, or as standalone microcontrollers. While there was
a lot of development work going into Cortex-M support from 2011 to 2016,
this largely stopped when it became clear that Zephyr and other RTOS
had taken over that market. To date, the only Cortex-M based based
microcontroller boards supported upstream are reference implementations.
Schedule these for removal after the next LTS kernel, so if any users
remain that want to update their kernels, they can stay on that
version for a few years before having to maintain the platform support
out of tree.
