0d40fedcd1 perf ui hists: Remove duplicated thread in popup_action
struct popup_action has a thread but this is duplicated in the
map_symbol. Remove the non-map_symbol version so that there's only ever
1 thread with a popup_action.

b84e081e07 perf annotate: Be robust to annotating without a thread
If a thread isn't given to map_symbol__get_arch(), try harder to determine
the arch for disassembly. Do this by utilizing fallback paths such as
reading the e_machine from a map's DSO ELF header for user-space libraries.
Additionally, rely on map__kmaps() and maps__machine() to reliably extract
the recorded machine environment and e_machine for kernel and kallsyms maps,
perfectly preventing silent, incorrect host fallbacks to uname() during
cross-platform Capstone annotation sessions.

At the same time, ensure all remaining uses of a map_symbol's thread pointer
do not assume it is non-NULL to eliminate UI segmentation faults, and remove
the fragile, redundant thread__get_arch() function to streamline the
annotate and disassembly subsystem architecture.

bd86119c3e perf ui hists: Fix dso_filter reference leak and exit zoom cleanup
In hists_browser__zoom_map(), the active dso is assigned as a raw
pointer to hists->dso_filter without acquiring a reference using
dso__get(). This creates a potential use-after-free defect if the
underlying dso is released while the filter remains active.

Fix it by properly acquiring a reference via dso__get() when assigning
the filter, and releasing it with dso__put() when clearing it.
Additionally, since the browser stack relies on pstack__new() and deletes
it completely upon exiting, we must fully reset the persistent hists
structure by un-eliding columns and recalculating histogram filter
states for dso, thread, and symbols upon exit to guarantee immaculate,
uncorrupted state across browser tab switching.

ae89153d5e perf ui hists: In report UI ensure thread is set with reference counting
Populates the map_symbol thread in the UI code to fix the e_machine
lookup for cross-platform disassembly when using the annotate action.
At the same time, refactor the UI options and actions generation to
comply with the perf subsystem's strict reference counting abstraction
requirements for 'struct map_symbol' and 'struct thread'. Introduce
explicit reference acquiring via map_symbol__copy() and thread__get() for
menu items, safely clean them up between menu iterations using a new
free_popup_actions() helper, and utilize insulated temporary action
variables for direct hotkey handler execution.

08b0cd02e9 perf ui hists: Guard against NULL hist_entry in add_script_opt()
In add_script_opt(), when the browser selection has no valid hist_entry
(for example, when all entries are filtered out or the trace is empty),
hist_browser__selected_entry() returns NULL.

Add an explicit check for he == NULL prior to accessing he->time to avoid a
potential NULL pointer dereference crash.

ad7620a2b9 perf ui hists: Fix stack use-after-return in symbol_filter_str
In evsel__hists_browse(), the local stack array 'buf' is assigned
directly to the persistent 'hists->symbol_filter_str' pointer. When the
browser returns or is exited, this dangling pointer remains active in
the 'hists' struct and is read asynchronously by the perf top background
timer, triggering a stack use-after-return.

Fix it by properly duplicating the input string using strdup(), safely
invoking zfree() to prevent memory leaks when overwriting, and cleanly
resetting and freeing the symbol filter string upon exiting the browser.

5bc1647216 perf ui hists: Fix NULL pointer array gap in add_script_opt()
In add_script_opt(), the function unconditionally increments the optstr
and act pointers for a second optional 'time' popup action before
attempting to invoke add_script_opt_2(). If the first add_script_opt_2()
call failed (for example, due to an asprintf allocation failure), this
leaves a NULL pointer gap in the options array at the prior index. When
ui__popup_menu() is later displayed, it dereferences this gap and
crashes.

Fix it by avoiding unconditional pointer increments. Only advance the
optstr and act pointers if the first script addition actually succeeded,
and safely attach the time parameter to the correct assigned action.

c627578393 perf ui hists: Include limits.h for PATH_MAX definition
Looking at switch_data_file(), it uses the POSIX constant PATH_MAX.
Omitting the explicit inclusion of limits.h can cause build failures on
musl libc systems, which do not implicitly include headers in the same way
glibc does. Fix this by explicitly including <limits.h> at the top of
tools/perf/ui/browsers/hists.c.

2ec3b98587 perf hists browser: Increase MAX_OPTIONS to prevent stack buffer overflow
In evsel__hists_browse(), the 'options' and 'actions' arrays are
statically allocated on the stack with a size of MAX_OPTIONS (16).
Further down, the function sequentially calls several add_*_opt()
functions, which increment nr_options without bounds checking.

Depending on the context (e.g., branch mode, scripting, annotations),
the sum of added options can theoretically exceed 16 (potentially
reaching up to ~19). This could lead to a stack buffer overflow.

Increase MAX_OPTIONS to 32 to safely accommodate the maximum possible
number of options without risking an overflow.

ab24487aaa perf evlist: Add reference count checking
Now the evlist is reference counted, add reference count checking so
that gets and puts are paired and easy to debug. Reference count
checking is documented here:
https://perfwiki.github.io/main/reference-count-checking/

This large patch is adding accessors to evlist functions and switching
to their use. There was some minor renaming as evlist__mmap is now an
accessor to the mmap variable, and the original evlist__mmap is
renamed to evlist__do_mmap.

74802634e4 perf annotate: Fix crashes on empty annotate windows
Annotate can open with an empty window if the disassembly tool fails.
After the linked change, the TUI started assuming there was a current
annotation line and could assert or segfault in the seek, refresh, and
source-toggle paths.

Handle empty annotate windows explicitly: set the asm entry count before
resetting the browser, return early when refreshing an empty list, and
ignore source line toggle when there is no current annotation line.

Fixes the following when opening an annotation:

  perf: ui/browser.c:125: ui_browser__list_head_seek: Assertion `pos != NULL' failed.
  Aborted

979e87ab1f perf symbol: Add setters for bitfields sharing a byte to avoid concurrent update issues
A problem with putting bitfields into struct symbol is that other bits in
the symbol could be updated concurrently and only one update to the
underlying storage unit happen, leading to lost updates.

To avoid this, use atomics to atomically read or set part of 16-bits
of flags in the symbol. Add accessors to simplify this.

The idle value has 3 values in preparation for a later change that
will lazily update it.

0e26ba5a87 perf disasm: Refactor arch__find and initialization of arch structs
Switch arch__find to using an ELF machine number rather than a
string.

Rather than an array of fixed size arch structs turn the init functions
into new functions indexed by the ELF machine they correspond to.

This allows data to be stored with a struct arch with the container_of
trick, so the priv variable can be removed.

Switch to using the thread to find the arch rather than the evsel as the
evsel only has limited notions of the running thread upon which
disassembly is performed.

Factor out the e_machine and e_flags into their own struct to make them
easier to pass around.

c4e3a00356 perf map_symbol: Switch from holding maps to holding thread
maps may belong to >1 thread. In contexts like symbolization
information from the thread may be useful, such as the ELF machine.

As the maps can be gained from the thread switch from holding maps in
struct map_symbol to holding the thread.

Holding the maps in addr_location is also redundant, switch this to
using thread__maps.

f2195c5b43 perf annotate: Fix Clang build by adding block in switch case
Clang and GCC disagree with what constitutes a "declaration after
statement". GCC allows declarations in switch cases without an extra
block, as long as it's immediately after the label. Clang does not.
Unfortunately this is the case even in the latest versions of both
compilers. The only option that makes them behave in the same way is
-Wpedantic, which can't be enabled in Perf because of the number of
warnings it generates.

Add a block to fix the Clang build, which is the only thing we can do.

262c61435c perf annotate: fix a crash when annotate the same symbol with 's' and 'T'
When perf report with annotation for a symbol, press 's' and 'T', then exit
the annotate browser. Once annotate the same symbol, the annotate browser
will crash.

The browser.arch was required to be correctly updated when data type
feature was enabled by 'T'. Usually it was initialized by symbol__annotate2
function. If a symbol has already been correctly annotated at the first
time, it should not call the symbol__annotate2 function again, thus the
browser.arch will not get initialized. Then at the second time to show the
annotate browser, the data type needs to be displayed but the browser.arch
is empty.

1e5881b168 perf annotate: Fix title line after return from call
The second title line which shows symbol and DSO name is broken after
moving to another function at 'callq' instruction.

The ui_browser__show_title() is used for the first line which shows
global sample count and event name so it doesn't change across the
functions.

What it needs after processing 'call' instruction is to update the
second line onlly.  Add a comment and call appropriate function.

You can verify the change by pressing ENTER on a 'call' instruction and
then ESC.

1086237f0a perf annotate: Use a hashmap to save type data
It can slowdown annotation browser if objdump is processing large DWARF
data.  Let's add a hashmap to save the data type info for each line.

Note that this is needed for TUI only because stdio only processes each
line once.  TUI will display the same line whenever it refreshes the
screen.

The session holds a perf_env pointer env. In UI code container_of is
used to turn the env to a session, but this assumes the session
header's env is in use. Rather than a dubious container_of, hold the
session in the evlist and derive the env from the session with
evsel__env, perf_session__env, etc.

e201757f7a perf annotate: Fix source code annotate with objdump
Recently it uses llvm and capstone to speed up annotation or disassembly
of instructions.  But they don't support source code view yet.  Until it
fixed, we can force to use objdump for source code annotation.

To prevent performance loss, it's disabled by default and turned it on
when user requests it in TUI by pressing 's' key.

Symbolize stack traces by creating a live machine. Add this
functionality to dump_stack and switch dump_stack users to use
it. Switch TUI to use it. Add stack traces to the child test function

f7458176a7 perf mem: Add 'dtlb' output field
This is a breakdown of perf_mem_data_src.mem_dtlb values.  It assumes
PMU drivers would set PERF_MEM_TLB_HIT bit with an appropriate level.

And having PERF_MEM_TLB_MISS means that it failed to find one in any
levels of TLB.  For now, it doesn't use PERF_MEM_TLB_{WK,OS} bits.

Also it seems Intel machines don't distinguish L1 or L2 precisely.  So I
added ANY_HIT (printed as "L?-Hit") to handle the case.

abe4dc24a8 perf mem: Add 'cache' and 'memory' output fields
This is a breakdown of perf_mem_data_src.mem_lvl_num.  But it's also
divided into two parts because the combination is bigger than 8.

Since there are many entries for different cache levels, 'cache' field
focuses on them.  I generalized buffers like LFB, MAB and MHB to L1-buf
and L2-buf.

The rest goes to 'memory' field which can be RAM, CXL, PMEM, IO, etc.

1e6569dca5 perf mem: Add 'op' output field
This is an actual example of the he_mem_stat based sample breakdown.  It
uses 'mem_op' field of union perf_mem_data_src which means memory
operations.

It'd have basically 'load' or 'store' which can be useful if PMU doesn't
have separate events for them like IBS or SPE.  In addition, there's an
entry in case load and store happen at the same time.  Also adds entries
for prefetching and execution.

b1fc83ca43 perf hist: Implement output fields for mem stats
This is a preparation for later changes to support mem_stat output.  The
new fields will need two lines for the header - the first line will show
type of mem stat and the second line will show the name of each item
which is returned by mem_stat_name().

Each element in the mem_stat array will be printed in percentage for the
hist_entry and their sum would be 100%.

Add new output field dimension only for SORT_MODE__MEM using mem_stat.

To handle possible name conflict with existing sort keys, move the order
of checking output field dimensions after the sort dimensions when it
looks for sort keys.

9fcb43e27c perf hist: Basic support for mem_stat accounting
Add a logic to account he->mem_stat based on mem_stat_type in hists.

Each mem_stat entry will have different meaning based on the type so the
index in the array is calculated at runtime using the corresponding
value in the sample.data_src.

Still hists has no mem_stat_types yet so this code won't work for now.

Later hists->mem_stat_types will be allocated based on what users want
in the output actually.

dbd11b6bda perf hist: Remove formats in hierarchy when cancel children
This is to support hierarchy options with custom output fields.
Currently perf_hpp__cancel_cumulate() only removes accumulated
overhead and latency fields from the global perf_hpp_list.

This is not used in the hierarchy mode because each evsel's hist
has its own separate hpp_list.  So it needs to remove the fields
from the lists too.  Pass evlist to the function so that it can
iterate the evsels.

1741189d84 perf ui browser hists: Set actions->thread before calling do_zoom_thread()
In 7cecb7fe83 ("perf hists: Move sort__has_comm into struct
perf_hpp_list") it assumes that act->thread is set prior to calling
do_zoom_thread().

This doesn't happen when we use ESC or the Left arrow key to Zoom out of
a specific thread, making this operation not to work and we get stuck
into the thread zoom.

In 6422184b08 ("perf hists browser: Simplify zooming code using
pstack_peek()") it says no need to set actions->thread, and at that
point that was true, but in 7cecb7fe83 a actions->thread == NULL
check was added before the zoom out of thread could kick in.

We can zoom out using the alternative 't' thread zoom toggle hotkey to
finally set actions->thread before calling do_zoom_thread() and zoom
out, but lets also fix the ESC/Zoom out of thread case.

92c48ec231 perf ui browser: Accept the left arrow key as a Zoom out if done on the first column
In the past (like before 2015) we had the familiar workflow of using
ENTER to get the menu and then zoom on a pid or DSO, kernel, etc and
then use UP and DOWN to navigate further, etc, and then when wanting to
go to the previous level, i.e. to Zoom out, use the LEFT arrow key.

This way the right hand stays in the arrow keys block that is near the
enter and we can go around real quickly.

But then, when we started supporting horizontal scrolling by columns to
support things like 'perf c2c report' that has lots of columns, we
switched to using the LEFT key exclusively for that, horizontal
scrolling, requiring the user to press 'm' to get a "context menu" that
then would allow users to select the Zoom out operation.

Ingo recently reported this as not intuitive, which is true, so lets
overload the LEFT key with both meanings, by doing a Zoom out operation
if the LEFT key is pressed when we're on the first column, but use it
also for horizontal scrolling if it is pressed when the cursor is on
column > 1.
