Pull poll annotations from Al Viro:
"This introduces a __bitwise type for POLL### bitmap, and propagates
the annotations through the tree. Most of that stuff is as simple as
'make ->poll() instances return __poll_t and do the same to local
variables used to hold the future return value'.
Some of the obvious brainos found in process are fixed (e.g. POLLIN
misspelled as POLL_IN). At that point the amount of sparse warnings is
low and most of them are for genuine bugs - e.g. ->poll() instance
deciding to return -EINVAL instead of a bitmap. I hadn't touched those
in this series - it's large enough as it is.
Another problem it has caught was eventpoll() ABI mess; select.c and
eventpoll.c assumed that corresponding POLL### and EPOLL### were
equal. That's true for some, but not all of them - EPOLL### are
arch-independent, but POLL### are not.
The last commit in this series separates userland POLL### values from
the (now arch-independent) kernel-side ones, converting between them
in the few places where they are copied to/from userland. AFAICS, this
is the least disruptive fix preserving poll(2) ABI and making epoll()
work on all architectures.
As it is, it's simply broken on sparc - try to give it EPOLLWRNORM and
it will trigger only on what would've triggered EPOLLWRBAND on other
architectures. EPOLLWRBAND and EPOLLRDHUP, OTOH, are never triggered
at all on sparc. With this patch they should work consistently on all
architectures"

Pull inode->i_version rework from Jeff Layton:
"This pile of patches is a rework of the inode->i_version field. We
have traditionally incremented that field on every inode data or
metadata change. Typically this increment needs to be logged on disk
even when nothing else has changed, which is rather expensive.
It turns out though that none of the consumers of that field actually
require this behavior. The only real requirement for all of them is
that it be different iff the inode has changed since the last time the
field was checked.
Given that, we can optimize away most of the i_version increments and
avoid dirtying inode metadata when the only change is to the i_version
and no one is querying it. Queries of the i_version field are rather
rare, so we can help write performance under many common workloads.
This patch series converts existing accesses of the i_version field to
a new API, and then converts all of the in-kernel filesystems to use
it. The last patch in the series then converts the backend
implementation to a scheme that optimizes away a large portion of the
metadata updates when no one is looking at it.
In my own testing this series significantly helps performance with
small I/O sizes. I also got this email for Christmas this year from
the kernel test robot (a 244% r/w bandwidth improvement with XFS over

We need to consistently enforce that keyed hashes cannot be used without
setting the key. To do this we need a reliable way to determine whether
a given hash algorithm is keyed or not. AF_ALG currently does this by
checking for the presence of a ->setkey() method. However, this is
actually slightly broken because the CRC-32 algorithms implement
->setkey() but can also be used without a key. (The CRC-32 "key" is not
actually a cryptographic key but rather represents the initial state.
If not overridden, then a default initial state is used.)
Prepare to fix this by introducing a flag CRYPTO_ALG_OPTIONAL_KEY which
indicates that the algorithm has a ->setkey() method, but it is not
required to be called. Then set it on all the CRC-32 algorithms.
The same also applies to the Adler-32 implementation in Lustre.
Also, the cryptd and mcryptd templates have to pass through the flag
from their underlying algorithm.

A lock-unlock is missing in ASHMEM_SET_SIZE ioctl which can result in a
race condition when mmap is called. After the !asma->file check, before
setting asma->size, asma->file can be set in mmap. That would result in
having different asma->size than the mapped memory size. Combined with
ASHMEM_UNPIN ioctl and shrinker invocation, this can result in memory
corruption.

The original purpose of the per-superblock d_anon list was to
keep disconnected dentries in the cache between consecutive
requests to the NFS server. Dentries can be disconnected if
a client holds a file open and repeatedly performs IO on it,
and if the server drops the dentry, whether due to memory
pressure, server restart, or "echo 3 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches".
This purpose was thwarted by commit 75a6f82a0d ("freeing unlinked
file indefinitely delayed") which caused disconnected dentries
to be freed as soon as their refcount reached zero.
This means that, when a dentry being used by nfsd gets disconnected, a
new one needs to be allocated for every request (unless requests
overlap). As the dentry has no name, no parent, and no children,
there is little of value to cache. As small memory allocations are
typically fast (from per-cpu free lists) this likely has little cost.
This means that the original purpose of s_anon is no longer relevant:
there is no longer any need to keep disconnected dentries on a list so
they appear to be hashed.
However, s_anon now has a new use. When you mount an NFS filesystem,
the dentry stored in s_root is just a placebo. The "real" root dentry
is allocated using d_obtain_root() and so it kept on the s_anon list.
I don't know the reason for this, but suspect it related to NFSv4
where a mount of "server:/some/path" require NFS to look up the root
filehandle on the server, then walk down "/some" and "/path" to get
the filehandle to mount.
Whatever the reason, NFS depends on the s_anon list and on
shrink_dcache_for_umount() pruning all dentries on this list. So we
cannot simply remove s_anon.
We could just leave the code unchanged, but apart from that being
potentially confusing, the (unfair) bit-spin-lock which protects
s_anon can become a bottle neck when lots of disconnected dentries are
being created.
So this patch renames s_anon to s_roots, and stops storing
disconnected dentries on the list. Only dentries obtained with
d_obtain_root() are now stored on this list. There are many fewer of
these (only NFS and NILFS2 use the call, and only during filesystem
mount) so contention on the bit-lock will not be a problem.
Possibly an alternate solution should be found for NFS and NILFS2, but
that would require understanding their needs first.

In trying to add support for drm_hwcomposer to HiKey,
I've needed to utilize the ION CMA heap, and I've noticed
problems with allocations on newer kernels failing.
It seems back with 204f672255 ("ion: Use CMA APIs directly"),
the ion_cma_heap code was modified to use the CMA API, but
kept the arguments as buffer lengths rather then number of pages.
This results in errors as we don't have enough pages in CMA to
satisfy the exaggerated requests.
This patch converts the ion_cma_heap CMA API usage to properly
request pages.
It also fixes a minor issue in the allocation where in the error
path, the cma_release is called with the buffer->size value which
hasn't yet been set.

Commit 8e55b6fd06 ("staging: lustre: lnet: replace list_for_each
with list_for_each_entry") was intended to be an idempotent change,
but actually broke the behavior of ksocknal_add_peer() causing mounts to fail.
The fact that it caused an existing "route2 = NULL;" to become
redundant could have been a clue. The fact that the loop body
set the new loop variable to NULL might also have been a clue
The original code relied on "route2" being NULL if nothing was found.
The new code would always set route2 to a non-NULL value if the list
was empty, and would likely crash if the list was not empty.
Restore correct functionality by using code-flow rather the value of
"route2" to determine whether to use on old route, or to add a new one.

The core currently send the READ0 and SEQIN+PAGEPROG commands in
nand_do_read/write_ops(). This is inconsistent with
->read/write_oob[_raw]() hooks behavior which are expected to send
these commands.
There's already a flag (NAND_ECC_CUSTOM_PAGE_ACCESS) to inform the core
that a specific controller wants to send the READ/SEQIN+PAGEPROG
commands on its own, but it's an opt-in flag, and existing drivers are
unlikely to be updated to pass it.
Moreover, some controllers cannot dissociate the READ/PAGEPROG commands
from the associated data transfer and ECC engine activation, and
developers have to hack things in their ->cmdfunc() implementation to
handle such complex cases, or have to accept the perf penalty of sending
twice the same command.
To address this problem we are planning on adding a new interface which
is passed all information about a NAND operation (including the amount
of data to transfer) and replacing all calls to ->cmdfunc() to calls to
this new ->exec_op() hook. But, in order to do that, we need to have all
->cmdfunc() calls placed near their associated ->read/write_buf/byte()
calls.
Modify the core and relevant drivers to make NAND_ECC_CUSTOM_PAGE_ACCESS
the default case, and remove this flag.

A recent change on Kernel 4.15-rc1 causes all tags with
/** to be handled as kernel-doc markups. Well, several
atomisp modules, it doesn't use kernel-doc, but some other
documentation markup (doxygen?).
So, suppress all those warns by:
- replacing /**< by /**.
- replacing /** by /*.
The core changes were done with:
for i in $(find drivers/staging/media/atomisp -type f); do sed 's,/\*\* ,/\*, ' -i $i; done
for i in $(find drivers/staging/media/atomisp -type f); do sed 's,/\*\*<,/\**,' -i $i; done

When not associated with an AP, wifi device drivers should respond to the
SIOCGIWESSID ioctl with a zero-length string for the SSID, which is the
behavior expected by dhcpcd.
Currently, this driver returns an error code (-1) from the ioctl call,
which causes dhcpcd to assume that the device is not a wireless interface
and therefore it fails to work correctly with it thereafter.
This problem was reported and tested at
https://github.com/lwfinger/rtl8188eu/issues/234.

crypto_ahash_import() may be called either after
crypto_ahash_init() or without such call. Right now
we always internally call init() as part of
import(), thus leaking memory and mappings if the
user has already called init() herself.
Fix this by only calling init() internally if the
state is not already initialized.

The s_flags are now called SB_*, with the names and the values for the

Note how the MS_xyz flags are the ones passed to the mount system call,

With all callbacks converted, and the timer callback prototype
switched over, the TIMER_FUNC_TYPE cast is no longer needed,
so remove it. Conversion was done with the following scripts:
perl -pi -e 's|\(TIMER_FUNC_TYPE\)||g' \

perl -pi -e 's|\(TIMER_DATA_TYPE\)||g' \

latter is not hard to fix if the need ever appears, the former is by
design.

As the page free path makes no distinction between cache hot and cold
pages, there is no real useful ordering of pages in the free list that
allocation requests can take advantage of. Juding from the users of
__GFP_COLD, it is likely that a number of them are the result of copying
other sites instead of actually measuring the impact. Remove the
__GFP_COLD parameter which simplifies a number of paths in the page
allocator.
This is potentially controversial but bear in mind that the size of the
per-cpu pagelists versus modern cache sizes means that the whole per-cpu
list can often fit in the L3 cache. Hence, there is only a potential
benefit for microbenchmarks that alloc/free pages in a tight loop. It's
even worse when THP is taken into account which has little or no chance
of getting a cache-hot page as the per-cpu list is bypassed and the
zeroing of multiple pages will thrash the cache anyway.
The truncate microbenchmarks are not shown as this patch affects the
allocation path and not the free path. A page fault microbenchmark was
tested but it showed no sigificant difference which is not surprising
given that the __GFP_COLD branches are a miniscule percentage of the
fault path.

"This is a fairly plain pull request. Lots of driver updates across the
stack, a huge number of static analysis cleanups including a close to
50 patch series from Bart Van Assche, and a number of new features
inside the stack such as general CQ moderation support.
Nothing really stands out, but there might be a few conflicts as you
take things in. In particular, the cleanups touched some of the same
lines as the new timer_setup changes.
Everything in this pull request has been through 0day and at least two
days of linux-next (since Stephen doesn't necessarily flag new
errors/warnings until day2). A few more items (about 30 patches) from
Intel and Mellanox showed up on the list on Tuesday. I've excluded
those from this pull request, and I'm sure some of them qualify as
fixes suitable to send any time, but I still have to review them
fully. If they contain mostly fixes and little or no new development,
then I will probably send them through by the end of the week just to
get them out of the way.
There was a break in my acceptance of patches which coincides with the
computer problems I had, and then when I got things mostly back under
control I had a backlog of patches to process, which I did mostly last
Friday and Monday. So there is a larger number of patches processed in
that timeframe than I was striving for.

they are always better), and the media tree with some of the odd
atomisp cleanups (take the media tree's version)"

Pull timer updates from Thomas Gleixner:
"Yet another big pile of changes:
- More year 2038 work from Arnd slowly reaching the point where we
need to think about the syscalls themself.
- A new timer function which allows to conditionally (re)arm a timer
only when it's either not running or the new expiry time is sooner
than the armed expiry time. This allows to use a single timer for
multiple timeout requirements w/o caring about the first expiry
time at the call site.
- A new NMI safe accessor to clock real time for the printk timestamp
work. Can be used by tracing, perf as well if required.
- A large number of timer setup conversions from Kees which got
collected here because either maintainers requested so or they
simply got ignored. As Kees pointed out already there are a few
trivial merge conflicts and some redundant commits which was
unavoidable due to the size of this conversion effort.
- Avoid a redundant iteration in the timer wheel softirq processing.
- Provide a mechanism to treat RTC implementations depending on their
hardware properties, i.e. don't inflict the write at the 0.5
seconds boundary which originates from the PC CMOS RTC to all RTCs.
No functional change as drivers need to be updated separately.
- The usual small updates to core code clocksource drivers. Nothing
really exciting"

It's good to have SPDX identifiers in all files to make it easier to
audit the kernel tree for correct licenses.
Update the drivers/staging/lustre files files with the correct SPDX
license identifier based on the license text in the file itself. The
SPDX identifier is a legally binding shorthand, which can be used
instead of the full boiler plate text.
This work is based on a script and data from Thomas Gleixner, Philippe
Ombredanne, and Kate Stewart.

Now that the SPDX tag is in all greybus files, that identifies the
license in a specific and legally-defined manner. So the extra GPL text
wording can be removed as it is no longer needed at all.
This is done on a quest to remove the 700+ different ways that files in
the kernel describe the GPL license text. And there's unneeded stuff
like the address (sometimes incorrect) for the FSF which is never
needed.
No copyright headers or other non-license-description text was removed.
