xsk: align TX metadata layout across ABIs
Add explicit padding before launch_time so xsk_tx_metadata has the same
layout on 32-bit and 64-bit systems.
On several architectures (csky, i386, nios2, m65k, openrisc, sh), the old
native 32-bit layout put launch_time at offset 12 and had a natural size of
20 bytes. Using sizeof(struct xsk_tx_metadata) as tx_metadata_len was already
rejected because the length must be a multiple of eight, so the
straightforward use of the interface was broken on those ABIs. Userspace
could still register a padded length of 24 bytes, though; mixing the old and
new layouts then silently reads launch_time from the wrong offset and
misprograms packet launch times. This intentionally replaces that
incompatible layout because the affected architectures are unlikely to
have any notable users. (x86_64 and arm64 have the most users and are _not_
affected)

"One of the 'small improvements all over the place' releases for us.
It's hard to draw any direct comparisons because summer vacations
disrupted our patch processing (and presumably - generation) quite a
bit.
Quick and dirty count suggests we (Paolo and I) merged a very similar
number of net (632) and net-next (648) patches. This is not telling
the full story either because 1/3 to 1/2 of the net-next patches also
*seem* like AI-driven low priority fixes, cleanups and clarifications.
We are completely overwhelmed, of course. The glimmer of hope is that
we secured sufficient LLM budget and access (thank you Meta!) to run
reviews with multiple frontier models on each patch. This eliminates
some hallucinations. That said, in terms of review, the LLMs can only
do so much.
The sad truth is that our APIs (especially for rare events like PCIe
errors, timeouts etc) have always been racy, and now LLMs don't let us
ignore that. I expect our direction for the next release will be to
tweak the reviews a little bit more, but start shifting focus to
letting the LLMs take care of the busy work - managing patchwork,
automating common process complaints, editing commit messages, and
maybe applying patches which already got "reviewed-by" tags from
people we trust...

"One small feature this cycle, the noiommu mode is useful in
single-purpose VMs running something like DPDK. It avoids the double
translation overhead and it seems to be commonly used with some hacks.

environment and provides page pinning and phyiscal address services
to userspace. This avoids nasty fragile tricks with mprotect and
pgmap

Pull timer and timekeeping core updates from Thomas Gleixner: - Fix a subtly inconsistency in the timekeeping code, which fails to account for the monotonicity adjustment in ntp_error. For small changes of the clocksource multiplicator (+/-1) which are typically used by the NTP PLL this is hard to observe. But for larger adjustments, e.g. caused by a direct frequency setting through adjtimex() the one-time uncompensated offset is significant. Cure this by adjusting ntp_error with the resulting offset so that the discrepancy is smoothed away over time - Make tick length calculations correct in NTP. The timekeeping core takes the quantisation of the clocksource into account when calculating the tick length to compensate for the deviation of the nominal NTP_INTERVAL_LENGTH. While timekeeping gets this right, NTP is not aware of that, which means it operates on the nominal value and not on the actual value which is determined by the clock source frequency. The rounding of a coarse clocksource like the ACPI PM timer results in a +127 PPM deviation. Cure this by exposing the deviation to the NTP code so that it can operate on the same data as the timekeeping core. This is purely kernel internal. User space still sees the nominal tick lenght via adjtimex(). - The accuracy of the NTP adjustments is fairly approximate as the code assumes that the invocations are precisely in NTP interval frequency ticks and the final adjustment can over and under-run. "The main change this cycle is a significant simplification that's been
overdue for a while now: standardizing on a single file contents
encryption implementation in ext4 and f2fs, instead of having two.
Specifically, the original filesystem-layer file contents encryption
implementation is removed, and the blk-crypto implementation is now
used unconditionally. blk-crypto delegates either to inline crypto
hardware or to the CPU via blk-crypto-fallback. The latter is
functionally equivalent to the original filesystem-layer code.
The blk-crypto implementation already existed, but previously it was
used only when the filesystem was mounted with "-o inlinecrypt". Now,
"-o inlinecrypt" just selects whether inline crypto hardware is used.
To allow maintaining that user control over hardware use, the
blk-crypto API is extended with a new flag BLK_CRYPTO_CFG_ALLOW_HW.
Overall, this removes quite a bit of redundant code from ext4, f2fs,
and fs/crypto/. It should make things easier for ongoing filesystem
efforts such as iomap support, large folios, and btrfs encryption
(btrfs had already been planning to use blk-crypto exclusively.)
There are two small behavior changes of note:
- Direct I/O now works on encrypted files even without "-o inlinecrypt",
rather than falling back to buffered I/O. This is effectively a
bugfix, though I'll continue to keep an eye out for any user that
may have been depending on the buffered I/O fallback.
- IV_INO_LBLK_32 policies are no longer supported in certain cases
that didn't make sense and have no known uses.
This has been in linux-next since July 22 with no reported issues. All
encryption xfstests pass on ext4 and f2fs. As usual I've also been
using it on a system with an fscrypt-encrypted home directory. Of
course, the blk-crypto code paths also aren't new and were already
being used on many systems via the inlinecrypt mount option.
In addition to the main change described above, there are a few other
cleanups such as using lock guards for mutexes, improving
documentation, and removing a workaround for outdated gcc versions"

net: af_unix: useful handling of LSM denials on SCM_RIGHTS
Right now if some LSM such as Smack denies an AF_UNIX socket peer to receive an SCM_RIGHTS fd, the SCM_RIGHTS fd array will be cut short at that point, and MSG_CTRUNC is set on return of recvmsg(). This is highly problematic behaviour, because it leaves the receiver wondering what happened. As per man page MSG_CTRUNC is supposed to indicate that the control buffer was sized too short, but suddenly a permission error might result in the exact same flag being set. Moreover, the receiver has no chance to determine how many fds got originally sent and how many were suppressed.[1] Add a SO_RIGHTS_NOTRUNC option to UNIX sockets to enable more useful handling of LSM denials when receiving SCM_RIGHTS messages: instead of truncating the message at the first blocked fd, keep every fd slot and store the LSM errno in the blocked slot. The socket option is inherited by the child accept() socket if set on the listen() socket. "Bigger cleanups:
- The lockref dead-count handling is tidied up.
The open-coded check for a count below zero as the dead marker
relies on information the caller should not have.
- make put_mnt_ns() leave mounts connected. Destroying a mount
namespace disconnected its mounts from their mount points. So a
file descriptor still open on the parent of a mount point could be
used to peek under it.
Locked mounts were already kept connected to prevent exactly that.
But a mount is only locked when its tree is copied across a user
namespace boundary. So a mount namespace set up by a privileged
component had no locked mounts and its mounts were disconnected.
Passing UMOUNT_CONNECTED keeps every mount connected and prevents
that bug.
- vfs_prepare_mode() passes S_IFDIR for directories. I meant to fix
that ago but didn't get to it. So now someone finally did it.
This kills the exception where the mode could be 0 when a directory
was created whereas every other creation operation passed it
explicitly already.
- move long delayed work for ufs, jffs2, hfsplus, hfs and affs from
the per-cpu system_long_wq to the new unbound system_dfl_long_wq.
None of that work relies on per-cpu state and the work item is
enqueued with queue_delayed_work() whose timer is global anyway. So
it may as well benefit from scheduler task placement.
Smaller fixes and cleanups:
- unlock_buffer() and journal_end_buffer_io_sync() use
clear_and_wake_up_bit()
- the pipe page pools are unified into a single per-pipe pool and the
extra wake_up(rd_wait) is limited to EPOLLET consumers
- eventpoll now computes its timer slack lazily in ep_poll()

"This contains a bunch of work for binfmt_misc. It fixes a bunch of
old bugs, reworks the locking, and then extends the format registry
so a binary type can be matched programmatically and its interpreter
computed per exec instead of being a fixed string recorded at
registration time.
This allows nixos and other to e.g., implement relocatable binaries
meaning the interpreter/dynamic loader can be determined
programatically, say found relative to the binary. The mechanism is
flexible and can support other policies:
- Handler lookup is now an rcu walk. An exec that matches no
binfmt_misc entry should now never write to a shared cacheline
- remove the VERBOSE_STATUS and USE_DEBUG compile time toggles
- convert the entry file to a seq_file which simplifies things quite
a bit and kills a lot of custom logic
- make flags proper enums
- rename struct Node to binfmt_misc_entry
- allow entries to be removed with unlink(2)
- Add the ability to attach bpf programs to binfmt_misc entries so
it's possible to dynamically choose the execution environment such
as the loader or interpreter on a per binary basis.
A handler is an instance of a binfmt_misc_ops struct_ops with a
->match() and a ->load() program. match() decides from the entry
lookup walk whether the handler applies under the same
registration-order. It can read file content as needed not only the
prefetched 256 bytes in bprm->buf.
load() then selects the interpreter and stages it through the new
bpf_binprm_set_interp(), bpf_binprm_set_interp_arg() and
bpf_binprm_set_flags() kfuncs.
Handlers are published in a registry keyed by the registering
task's user namespace and activated through the existing text
interface with a new 'B' type carrying the handler name:

The permission and namespacing model is unchanged. Activating a
handler requires the same write access to an instance as any other
registration. A container mounting its own instance escapes the
host's entries exactly as before. The computed interpreter is
opened with open_exec() under the caller's credentials and goes
through full LSM vetting as the next binprm level. A program can
only ever redirect the caller to something the caller could exec
anyway.
- Two dispatch modes are added. So far the chosen interpreter owns
the whole process identity (argv[0], /proc/pid/cmdline,
/proc/self/exe all name interpreter information). So relocatable
find the dynamic linker instead. Also a binary passed to execveat()
as an inaccessible O_CLOEXEC fd cannot run at all and gdb trips
because AT_ENTRY and AT_PHDR do not match the exe file. So PIE
symbols are unrelocated.
This adds transparent dispatch which allows the interpreter to load
the binary through AT_EXECFD and leaves the argument vector exactly
as the caller built it and labels mm->exe_file and comm with the
binary. It also raises the AT_FLAGS_TRANSPARENT_INTERP aux vector
bit. The interpreter keeps control of mapping the binary.
The second mode is loader substitution. This allows a binary to be
executed natively and only the interpreter to be changed.
- Last, interpreters can be bound at registration time. Each
interpreter is opened by its own write with the credentials the
entry file was opened with. The program picks one per exec with
bpf_binprm_select_interp().
Ucounts are used to properly account for pre-opened interpreters
via /proc/sys/user/max_binfmt_misc_interpreters"

ALSA: uapi: Drop __bitwise and __force prefix
We've used __bitwise and __force for some integer parameters for sanity-checks via sparse, with a hope that it'll reduce the misuse or incorrect assignments. This worked in principle, but OTOH, it's been quite a PITA, making the code much uglier than its gain, too, because one had to cast with __force everywhere. Also, Rust-binding would skip those defines because of __force usage, which will become more pains in near future. So let's drop __bitwise and __force prefix usages. In this patch, we start cleaning up the UAPI headers at first. The former bit-wised typedefs are still kept for compatibility for now. As it's only markers for sparse, the changes are absolutely safe, per se. ipv6: add ip6_del_rt_reason()

It has no skip_notify argument: a caller that records a deletion reason wants the notification that carries it. The reason is unused for now. It was an effort to enhance fscache as a kernel cache for lazy pulling (at least according to previous Incremental FS discussion [1]) and EROFS over fscache was the in-tree user of this mode. fscache has since evolved to be netfslib-oriented, serving network filesystem inodes via the netfs library, but EROFS never acts as a network filesystem and we need to cache golden filesystem images rather than individual EROFS inodes. Since EROFS over fscache is now removed, clean up netfs/fscache/ cachefiles upstream too. ipvs: separate destination availability state
IPVS configuration paths update destination availability while connection
accounting updates destination overload state. The two independent states
share dest->flags, so their read-modify-write updates can race and lose one
another.
Keep OVERLOAD in flags, where the preceding patch serializes its updates
with dst_lock, and move AVAILABLE to cflags. This keeps configuration-
controlled availability out of the scheduler hot cacheline until a
scheduler needs to check it. It also prevents availability updates from
clobbering overload state.
The destination status bits are not exposed through the IPVS sockopt or
netlink interfaces, so keep their definitions in the internal IPVS header.
Readers can still observe stale destination state; this does not provide a
cross-field snapshot.

KVM: PPC: Introduce KVM_CAP_PPC_COMPAT_CAPS and wire up ioctl
Introduce a new capability and ioctl to expose CPU compatibility modes supported by the host processor for nested guests. On IBM POWER systems, newer processor generations (N) can operate in compatibility modes corresponding to earlier generations, like (N-1) and (N-2). This is particularly relevant for nested virtualization, where nested KVM guests may need to run with a specific processor compatibility level. Introduce KVM_CAP_PPC_COMPAT_CAPS capability and the corresponding KVM_PPC_GET_COMPAT_CAPS vm ioctl. The ioctl returns a bitmap describing the compatibility modes supported by the host in respective bit numbers, allowing userspace (e.g., QEMU) to select an appropriate compatibility level when configuring nested KVM guests. The ioctl handling is added in kvm_arch_vm_ioctl() and retrieves host CPU compatibility capabilities via a PowerPC-specific backend implementation when available. The struct kvm_ppc_compat_caps places the 'size' field first so it can be read alone via get_user() before copy_struct_from_user() is called, avoiding pointer arithmetic to locate the size field. The ioctl is defined using _IO so the ioctl number remains stable even if the struct grows in future versions. It uses copy_struct_from_user() and copy_struct_to_user() to provide forward- and backward-compatible extensibility: older userspace passing a smaller struct to a newer kernel gets zero-padded trailing fields. Newer userspace passing a larger struct to an older kernel (usize > ksize) succeeds if trailing bytes are zero (the kernel reports back min(usize, ksize) as the filled size); if trailing bytes are non-zero, the kernel writes back ksize into host_caps.size and returns -E2BIG so userspace can retry with the correct size. KVM_PPC_COMPAT_CAPS_SIZE_VER0 is defined as a frozen integer constant (24) marking the size of the initial struct version, used as the minimum floor for size field validation, similar to other versioned struct interfaces in the kernel. The 'flags' field is reserved for future use. The kernel rejects any call where flags is non-zero with -EINVAL, preventing garbage values from being baked into ABI permanently. The ioctl returns appropriate error codes: E2BIG if usize exceeds PAGE_SIZE, or if new userspace provides a larger struct with non-zero trailing bytes (with ksize written back into host_caps.size for the retry); EINVAL for an invalid size or non-zero reserved fields; EFAULT for failed copy operations; and ENOTTY if the backend doesn't implement get_compat_caps. net: devmem: allow rx-page-size > PAGE_SIZE per dmabuf binding
Every devmem dmabuf binding today hands the page_pool PAGE_SIZE niovs.
This caps a single RX descriptor at PAGE_SIZE, burning CPU on buffer
churn for large flows.
Add a bind-time netlink attribute, NETDEV_A_DMABUF_RX_PAGE_SIZE, that
lets userspace request a larger niov size. The value must be a power of
two >= PAGE_SIZE.
The TX path is changed to always pass PAGE_SIZE.
Measurements:

tun/tap: add IFF_BACKPRESSURE flag
Add the IFF_BACKPRESSURE flag to the UAPI header and to its tools/ copy. The flag has no effect yet, it is the opt-in switch for the qdisc backpressure logic added by the following patches. It is added to TUN_FEATURES only in the last patch of the series, once the implementation is complete. Until then TUNSETIFF silently masks it off, as it does for any flag outside TUN_FEATURES. Keeping the flag and its users in separate patches would either leave a window where backpressure is unconditional, or make the opt-in a later add-on. Adding the flag first lets every following patch be a no-op unless it is set. fwctl/bnxt: Add DMA buffer support for HWRM commands
Several HWRM commands carry __le64 DMA address fields in their input structures; firmware reads from or writes to the memory those addresses point to. Have a static per-command descriptor table in the driver that records the details of the DMA fields in each supported HWRM input struct. When a DMA-bearing HWRM command arrives, the driver reads the userspace pointer out of each declared address field and clears the field, allocates a DMA-coherent kernel buffer sized from the command's own length information, copies data to/from the userspace pointer, and patches the field with the real DMA bus address before the command is sent to firmware. Responses are copied back to the original userspace pointer afterward. Scope-gated allow-list and timeout value list are updated with the new the commands. openvswitch: remove support for legacy tunnel types
ovs-vswitchd doesn't use OVS_VPORT_TYPE_GRE/VXLAN/GENEVE with the Linux kernel module since adding support for standard tunnel devices with COLLECT_METADATA back in 2017. The code to use them was only activated as a fallback for old kernels, so not used in practice. And it is now fully removed in the upcoming OVS 4.0 release. Modern way to use tunnels with OVS is to create standard tunnel ports with RTM_NEWLINK + COLLECT_METADATA and add them as OVS_VPORT_TYPE_NETDEV. Device reference management and the netlink options parsing for these legacy port types is complicated and was a CVE magnet in the previous release cycles. Existence of these modules also makes locking analysis for geneve module and other core tunnel devices unnecessarily more complicated, especially in light of migration to per-netns locking. Since there are no actual users for these port types for a very long time, let's just remove the support entirely. There is no practical reason to run OVS from 2017 on a recent kernel. While it's technically a uAPI change in some sense, from the user's perspective this removal looks indistinguishable from the kernel built with CONFIG_OPENVSWITCH_GENEVE/VXLAN/GRE disabled. And it seems like removal of unused drivers/modules is not a rare event these days. A comment is added to the uAPI header noting that standard RTM_NEWLINK with COLLECT_METADATA followed by OVS_VPORT_CMD_NEW with the simple OVS_VPORT_TYPE_NETDEV should be used instead. Modules responsible for these tunnel ports are removed as well as selftests covering this functionality. Further cleanups will follow. ASoC: Intel: Remove obsolete UAPI headers
Both target Intel's skylake-driver, previously found in sound/soc/intel which has been removed few years ago and succeeded by the avs-driver. snd_sst_tokens.h is succeeded by uapi/sound/intel/avs/tokens.h skl-tplg-interface.h to the best of my knowledge has no users. Its types are reflected in sound/soc/intel/avs/messages.h and are not intended for public use. Closest public equivalent would be the firmware's processing modules but in such case a user has to compile against Intel's AudioDSP headers, not Linux ones. ALSA: control: add ioctl to retrieve full card components
The fixed-size components field in SNDRV_CTL_IOCTL_CARD_INFO can be too small on systems with many audio devices. Keep the existing struct snd_ctl_card_info ABI intact and add a new ioctl SNDRV_CTL_IOCTL_CARD_BYTES that carries a variable-length payload selected by a type discriminator. The first defined type SND_CTL_CARD_BTYPE_COMPONENTS returns the full components string. The ioctl is designed to be reused for other variable-length card payloads in the future. The user-space caller may set data_allocated == 0 (or data == NULL) to query the required length; otherwise the kernel copies the payload into the user buffer and writes back the actual length in data_len. When the legacy components field in struct snd_ctl_card_info is truncated, '>' is written just before the NUL terminator to signal to user-space that the full string is available via the new ioctl. card->components is now dynamically allocated and grown in 32 byte increments via krealloc(), capped at 512 bytes. ASoC: qcom: qdsp6: add topology-driven Audio IF support
Add topology parsing and media-format programming for Audio IF source and sink modules. Add the Audio IF module IDs, the required topology tokens, and a dedicated topology loader that stores the parsed interface configuration in the AudioReach module state. Also add the Audio IF media-format path that sends the interface configuration, hardware endpoint media format, and frame-duration parameters for Audio IF modules. This keeps the serial-interface configuration topology-driven while still allowing the machine driver to provide runtime slot and media format settings. The same Audio IF path can then be reused for TDM, PCM, and I2S style backends. The new UAPI tokens (AR_TKN_U16_MODULE_SYNC_SRC=262 through AR_TKN_U8_MODULE_INV_EXT_BIT_CLK=276) are added, together with the value defines used by the sync source, sync mode, data delay, interface mode, bit clock type, and polarity tokens. MODULE_ID_AUDIO_IF_SINK (0x0700117C) and MODULE_ID_AUDIO_IF_SOURCE (0x0700117D) are introduced in this patch. This Module is validated on Hawi and Shikra platforms. batman-adv: add missing kernel-doc comments
batman-adv requires kernel-doc for all functions and data types visible outside their own translation unit. Promoting a function from static to module-wide visibility currently requires adding documentation from scratch. However, this burden falls on whoever promotes a function from static to module-wide visibility, rather than its original implementer. exec: add AT_FLAGS_TRANSPARENT_INTERP
A transparent binfmt_misc dispatch hands the binary to the interpreter
through AT_EXECFD and leaves the argument vector exactly as the caller
built it. The loader on the receiving end has to know which contract it
got.
On the classic 'O'/'C' entries the binary's path is spliced into the
argument vector and the loader consumes arguments. In transparent mode
nothing was spliced and argv belongs entirely to the program. This
cannot be inferred from AT_EXECFD alone. Raise a new AT_FLAGS bit

iommu/arm-smmu-v3: Support IDR5.DS and widen the TLBI SCALE field
An SMMU implementing SMMU_IDR5.DS extends the range invalidation commands: the SCALE field grows a 6th bit, raising its maximum value from 31 to 39, and TTL == 0b01 becomes a valid level hint for a 16KB translation granule. Add a new ARM_SMMU_FEAT_DS feature detecting the DS bit, and widen the CMDQ_TLBI_0_SCALE field to its architectural 6 bits. Mask the scale value explicitly in arm_smmu_cmdq_batch_add_range(), so the range invalidation path emits the same commands as before, keeping the pre-existing 5-bit truncation of a scale above 31. Also list DS as a valid IDR5 field in the iommu_hw_info_arm_smmuv3 kdoc: iommufd has always reported the raw IDR5 register, so a VMM may conclude from that bit alone that it can expose DS to its guest. Add sdei_event_signal(), a thin wrapper over the SDEI_EVENT_SIGNAL call (DEN0054) that makes the software-signalled event (event 0) pending on a target PE -- delivered NMI-like even when that PE has interrupts masked. This patch adds two static helpers in drivers/net/phy/phy-c45.c to configure and read back master-slave roles for non BASE-T1 Clause 45 PHYs via the 10GBASE-T AN control/status registers.
